Local sports teams to bet on in Arizona

Arizona boasts several professional and college sports teams that are well supported by local fans. They contribute to the state’s vibrant sports culture and are popular betting targets in the state. Let’s look at the local teams you can back through Arizona sports betting:

Arizona Cardinals (NFL)

The Arizona Cardinals are the NFL’s oldest continuously operated pro sports franchise. Established in 1898, they play their home games at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The Cardinals are not originally from the state. They were founded in Chicago and later moved to St. Louis before settling in Arizona in 1988. The Cardinals managed two pre-merger titles, but have yet to hoist the Lombardi Trophy for winning the Super Bowl.

Arizona Diamondbacks (MLB)

Founded in 1998, the Arizona Diamondbacks compete in MLB. They clinched their first and only World Series title in 2001, just four years after the team’s inception. It makes them one of the quickest expansion teams to win a championship in American sports history. They play home games at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Phoenix Suns (NBA)

Since 1968, the Phoenix Suns have been a prominent fixture in the NBA. Their home court is the Footprint Center in Phoenix, where fans gather to cheer on the team. The Suns have a rich history of All-Star players. They include Hall of Famers like Steve Nash, the iconic “Sir Charles” Barkley, and now Kevin Durant.

Phoenix Mercury (WNBA)

The Phoenix Mercury, formed in 1997, compete in the Western Conference of the WNBA and share the Footprint Center with the Suns. The Mercury are three-time league champions, joint-second on the all-time list.

Arizona State Sun Devils (NCAA)

The ASU Sun Devils compete in the new-look Big 12 Conference, embodying the spirit of Tempe. The Sun Devils are competitive in all major sports including football, basketball, and baseball –  but have also found success at more niche sports like golf and swimming.

Arizona Wildcats (NCAA)

A new tenant of the Big 12, the Arizona Wildcats are a traditional college basketball power – regularly ranking in the Top 25 and competing for conference titles and national honors. Legendary coach Lute Olson lead the team to four Final 4’s and a National Championship (1997) during his 24 seasons with the University, and the team has remained competitive since his departure. While the football team is on a 30-year conference title drought (1993), the shift from the Pac 12 to the Big 12 may be the change of scenery needed for the program to rediscover form.

Arizona sports betting law

Both online and retail sports betting are now legal in Arizona, but it hasn’t always been that way. In fact, state legislators had to work diligently to bring sportsbooks like Hard Rock Bet to the Grand Canyon State. Below we’ll dig into the legislative process that paved the way for legal sports betting, and what’s included in Arizona’s betting laws. Remember, each state passes their own legislation so betting markets will look slightly different as you travel the country.

Compromise leads to betting progress

With PASPA falling in the Supreme Court in May 2018, the door was open for states like Arizona to pursue the legalization of sports betting. However, there were many factors at play in Arizona. Namely, the state government would need to work together with in-state tribes to find an agreeable way forward and what transpired was a win/win for both sides in the form of HB 2772. Through it, online and retail sports betting was approved, and in-state tribes were permitted to expand their retail casino operations to include games like roulette, craps, and other Vegas-style favorites that were previously unavailable.

HB 2772 passes, becomes law

While it wasn’t unanimous, HB 2772 passed by a 23-6 margin in the state senate on April 12, 2021 and was off to the Governor’s desk. Doug Ducey penned the bill into law on April 15, 2021 – legal sports betting was a “GO” in Arizona. A few months later the first online sportsbooks launched in the state on September 9, 2021. Bettors can now download sportsbooks like Hard Rock Bet and place bets from anywhere in the state.

What’s in the law?

Arizona’s sports betting legislation has led to a healthy, competitive environment. Let’s take a look at some highlights:

  • Arizona sports betting regulator: Arizona Department of Gaming
  • AZ sports betting age: 21
  • Licensing: 20 total betting licenses – 10 tribal, and 10 for in-state sports teams
    • Each license allows for two online skins and a retail sportsbook
    • Hard Rock Bet is an approved operator through an agreement with the Navajo Nation
  • Betting on college sports: Yes! You can bet on college sports in Arizona
    • This includes in-state college teams
    • College player props are not offered
  • Location: You must be in the state of Arizona to place a bet!
